What are the different types of smart water meters?
Smart water meters have been widely used in cities, towns, rural areas, and even remote mountainous regions. In recent years, smart water meters have developed rapidly, and there are now many different types and applications of these meters. Below, we’ll introduce you to the various kinds of smart water meters available.
1. Classified by measurement principle
They can be categorized into velocity-type water meters and volumetric water meters.
(1) Velocity-type water meter: A water meter installed in a closed pipeline, consisting of a moving element that is directly driven by the velocity of the water flow.
(2) Positive-displacement water meter: A water meter installed in a pipeline, consisting of chambers of known volume that are sequentially filled and emptied by the fluid, coupled with a mechanism driven by the fluid flow; also referred to as a volumetric-displacement water meter.
2. Classified by nominal diameter
They can be categorized into large-caliber water meters and small-caliber water meters.
Water meters with a nominal diameter of 50 mm or less are commonly referred to as small-diameter water meters, while those with a nominal diameter of more than 50 mm are called large-diameter water meters. These two types of water meters are sometimes also known as residential water meters and industrial water meters, respectively.
3. Classified by purpose
They can be categorized into residential water meters and industrial water meters.
4. Classified by temperature
They can be divided into cold-water meters and hot-water meters.
They can be classified into cold-water meters and hot-water meters based on the medium’s temperature, with 30℃ serving as the dividing line.
(1) Cold-water meter: A water meter with a minimum medium temperature of 0℃ and a maximum medium temperature of 30℃.
(2) Hot-water meter: A meter whose medium operates at a minimum temperature of 30℃ and a maximum temperature of 90℃, 130℃, or 180℃.
The requirements vary slightly from country to country; in some countries, the upper limit for cold-water meters can reach 50 degrees Celsius.

5. By pressure type
They are divided into ordinary water meters and high-pressure water meters.
6. Classified by immersion condition
Based on whether the counter is immersed in water, water meters are classified into wet-type, dry-type, and liquid-sealed water meters.
7. Classified by form
It is divided into analog, digital, and analog-digital hybrid types.
The above is a classification of smart water meters. We hope this article will help you gain a better understanding and awareness of smart water meters.
