Assessment of China's Water Resources
China is a country severely affected by drought and water scarcity. Although its total freshwater resources amount to 2.8 trillion cubic meters, ranking fourth in the world, its per capita share is only 2,200 cubic meters, making it one of the 13 countries globally with the lowest per capita water availability. Currently, groundwater is suffering from varying degrees of pollution, and the situation is worsening year by year, posing a serious threat to the safety of residents' drinking water.
Below is an assessment of China's water resources.
1. Total precipitation: The average annual total precipitation from 1956 to 1979 was 6.2 trillion cubic meters, equivalent to a precipitation depth of 648 mm.
2. River runoff: The nation’s total river runoff amounts to 2.7 trillion cubic meters, equivalent to a runoff depth of 284 mm. Of this total, groundwater discharge accounts for 678 billion cubic meters, glacier meltwater recharge totals 56 billion cubic meters, and the volume of water flowing in from outside the country is approximately 17.2 billion cubic meters.

3. The soil water flux, estimated based on land surface evapotranspiration and groundwater discharge, is approximately 4.2 trillion cubic meters nationwide.
4. Groundwater resources refer to the total recharge of groundwater that is directly connected to precipitation and surface water through recharge and discharge processes. Based on the current status of water resource development and utilization, the nation’s multi-year average groundwater resources amount to approximately 828.8 billion cubic meters.
5. Total water resources: China’s total water resources amount to 2.8 trillion cubic meters.
The above is a summary of our country’s assessment of water resource quality. It is imperative that we raise water prices and implement a “tiered pricing system” without delay. We hope everyone will cherish water resources and avoid waste.
