Gain knowledge—let’s take a look at the history of water meters!
The water meter is an indispensable measuring instrument for every household. With the advancement of time and technology, water meters have spanned the long river of history, enduring nearly two centuries. They have evolved into today’s smart water meters, becoming an essential component of smart cities.
The world’s first water meter was invented in 1825 in the United Kingdom by a man named Klose—a balance-tank type water meter with meter-like features. However, China began using and producing water meters relatively later than other countries. In 1879, during the late Qing Dynasty, Li Hongzhang established the country’s very first waterworks plant. From then on, water meters started to enter China. By the 20th century, companies such as the Shanghai Guanghua Machinery Factory were importing certain components from abroad to develop and manufacture water meters themselves. At that time, China’s technology for developing water meters was still backward, and key components could not be produced domestically. As a result, for a long period, foreign countries dominated the domestic water-meter market. Moreover, since these water meters varied widely in both design and standards, it posed significant difficulties for subsequent maintenance and repair work.

Starting in 1955, some first-tier city tap water companies began independently researching and developing water meters. As the nation’s strength grew and industry advanced and developed, generation after generation of researchers and experts worked diligently, continuously innovating and making breakthroughs—achieving one “zero” breakthrough after another. This has led to successive generations of water meter upgrades, making residents’ lives smarter and more convenient, and enhancing their sense of happiness.
