What should you do if your smart water meter is being stolen?
Smart water meters are widely used both in urban and rural areas, effectively addressing issues such as difficulties in bill payment. They bring convenience to tap water services and make life easier for the general public as well as property management companies. However, individuals with malicious intent attempt to steal water by secretly removing the water meter during installation and then connecting two pipes directly, bypassing the meter altogether. Such actions represent a serious moral lapse and will also be punishable under the law.

Stealing water constitutes theft and is punishable according to the converted value of the stolen water. If the amount of water stolen is less than 1,000 yuan, it will not be subject to punishment under the Criminal Law, but it will be subject to penalties prescribed by the Law on Public Security Administration Punishments.
According to Article 49 of the Law on Administrative Punishment for Public Security, anyone who commits theft, fraud, looting, robbery, extortion, or intentionally damages public or private property shall be detained for a period of more than 5 days but no more than 10 days, and may also be fined up to 500 yuan. In cases with more serious circumstances, the offender shall be detained for a period of more than 10 days but no more than 15 days, and may also be fined up to 1,000 yuan.
The law is designed to safeguard the safety of people’s lives and property. Don’t take chances or try to exploit loopholes in the law—otherwise, you’ll face legal punishment.
