How to ensure water supply safety during the COVID-19 pandemic
The COVID-19 virus is raging worldwide, with the global number of confirmed cases exceeding 10 million. Recently, fecal samples from confirmed patients have tested positive via nucleic acid testing, raising the possibility of waterborne transmission. According to China’s water quality standards, tap water is not susceptible to viral contamination. However, ensuring the safety of domestic water supplies remains a top priority. The Water Special Office of the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development has invited numerous experts to provide reference recommendations.
1. We have implemented closed-loop management within the plant area, rigorously enforced epidemic prevention and control measures, conducted thorough disinfection inside the water plant, carried out screening and temperature checks on all visitors and personnel, and ensured that all employees wear masks while on duty.
2. Strictly implement the three-level water quality monitoring system involving plant teams, laboratories, government departments, and third-party quality testing agencies commissioned by the authorities. Strengthen sampling and testing of raw water, treated water at the plant outlet, and water in the distribution network to ensure stringent water quality control for citizens.
3. Given the potential for viruses to accumulate in sludge from sedimentation tanks and backwash water, during the pandemic period, water treatment plants should avoid reusing sludge from sedimentation tanks and backwash water from filter beds in the treatment process system.

4. Considering that the virus may be transmitted via droplets generated during the backwashing of filter pools, it is recommended that water plant operators and relevant personnel wear masks during maintenance work to protect themselves.
5. Ensure the safe and stable operation of the water supply system, prevent sudden water outages, abrupt changes in flow rate and pressure, reduce the failure rate of the pipeline network, maintain stable operation of the water supply system, and guarantee the residual chlorine level at the end of the pipeline network.
The fight against the epidemic is a war fought without gunshots, yet the epidemic itself is merciless while humanity remains full of compassion. Together, we must unite as one and join forces to combat the epidemic.
