What is water meter spinning freely, and what should I do about it?
No one is home, yet the water meter is quietly spinning on its own. What could be causing this phenomenon? The reason is that when a new water meter is installed or moved to a different location, the water in the pipes is drained out, allowing air to enter. When the water supply is restored, the flowing water pushes the air inside the pipes toward the dead ends of the indoor plumbing system, creating “compressed air.” This process continues until the air pressure and water pressure reach equilibrium. At this point, there’s an interface between the air and the water, and the pressure difference across this interface becomes zero. As a result, the water meter starts spinning without any actual water flow—this is known as “empty rotation” of the water meter. To prevent this from happening, we’d like to introduce the following methods.
1. Replace the water meter battery
The water meter requires batteries to operate and does not need complicated wiring. Typically, smart water meters have a long service life of around 10 to 15 years. However, during use, it’s important to take proper precautions against moisture and damage. When replacing the battery, make sure the operation is precise, and never mix old and new batteries.
2. If it’s not used for a long time, you need to turn off the valve.
Many users install smart water meters but are away from home for extended periods for various reasons. In such cases, to protect the performance of the smart water meter, remember to shut off the valve on the smart water meter; otherwise, the meter could be damaged.
3. Take care to prevent moisture and freezing.
Although smart water meters are technologically advanced, they can still be damaged by certain weather and environmental factors. In particular, during cold winters or rainy days, it’s important to take proper protective measures for the water meters.
