How can we prevent smart water meters from being hacked and water stolen?
Mechanical water meters are gradually being replaced by smart water meters, which have solved the problem of in-home meter readings by water companies. They’ve also made it more convenient for users to check their consumption and pay their bills. However, some users have begun to think about ways to hack and steal water.
Many users secretly remove the smart water meters during installation and then connect the two pipes directly, bypassing the meter altogether. Until an effective regulatory mechanism is put in place, we’ll have to rely solely on individuals’ moral integrity and property management.

root According to Article 49 of the Law on Administrative Punishment for Public Security, anyone who commits theft, fraud, looting, robbery, extortion, or intentionally damages public or private property shall be detained for a period of more than 5 days but no more than 10 days, and may also be fined up to 500 yuan. In cases with more serious circumstances, the offender shall be detained for a period of more than 10 days but no more than 15 days, and may also be fined up to 1,000 yuan.
If a user steals large quantities of water, it constitutes theft and will not only result in a fine but also face administrative penalties. Smart water meter manufacturers have also implemented certain measures. Each time a meter is removed, its technical features are activated, making it immediately apparent during inspections and helping to mitigate the risk of smart water meters being hacked and stolen.
