The era of smart water meters has begun.
In many residential communities, mechanical water meters are being replaced with smart water meters. These smart meters not only feature waterproof capabilities but also come equipped with built-in batteries. Users can easily and conveniently top up their water usage by simply inserting an IC card—no need to carry cash or worry about complex procedures. As long as you keep your IC card safe in daily life, that’s all it takes. More and more residential communities are starting to adopt smart water meters, signaling the dawn of the smart meter era. Next, let’s take a closer look at how smart water meters work.

A smart water meter looks no different from a conventional water meter. It features an LCD display, and as long as there’s water flowing, the impeller inside will start rotating. By counting the number of rotations accumulated by the impeller, the meter can accurately measure how much water has been used. This is known as an IC-card water meter—or a prepaid water meter. While you’re using water, the electronic display will show both the current water consumption and the corresponding cost. If the remaining balance falls below a certain threshold, the meter will issue a warning alert. In some cases, the meter may even automatically shut off the valve, prompting the user to pay their water bill. If the user fails to pay within the specified time frame, the water supply will be temporarily suspended. Once the user settles the outstanding payment, the water supply will resume as normal.
The batteries used in smart water meters also have a long service life—typically over 8 years—allowing users to enjoy peace of mind and reliable use for an extended period.
The dawn of the smart water meter era also indirectly demonstrates the country’s rapidly advancing technology, as well as the growing intelligence and convenience in our daily lives. As a result, people’s sense of happiness in their lives is steadily increasing.
