“Multi-meter Integration” Kicks Off Smart Living
In the past, people had to pay for water, electricity, and gas bills—and staff would come to their homes to collect payments. Notice slips for various bill payments were posted on doors. Every household has probably gone through this experience at some point. However, with the advancement of technology, paying these bills can now be done conveniently via mobile phones. The concept of “multi-meter integration” refers to a unified approach that leverages existing centralized meter-reading standards, communication technologies, and equipment systems, allowing multiple meters to share a single data transmission channel during data collection. In other words, multi-meter integration means unifying the process of information gathering.
The “Guiding Opinions on Actively Promoting the ‘Internet Plus’ Initiative,” issued by the State Council, specifically lists “‘Internet Plus’ Smart Energy” as a separate item. It calls for the coordinated deployment of network infrastructure that deeply integrates power grids and communication networks, enabling co-transmission over the same cables and joint construction and sharing to avoid redundant investments. It also encourages the development of new services—such as household energy efficiency management—based on smart grids.

Take Shanghai as an example: Starting in early 2014, a pilot program for “integrating multiple meters into one” was launched. Currently, this “integration of multiple meters” initiative—covering water, electricity, and heating—is being carried out in numerous provinces and cities including Beijing, Shandong, and Liaoning. With the implementation of information collection and infrastructure development, users can now check their consumption data in real time and make payments online. This has greatly simplified daily life for the public, enabling them to more tangibly experience the convenience brought by technological advancements.
