Amazing, my country! Fengning in Chengde has completed the world’s largest pumped-storage hydroelectric power station.
The Chengde Fengning Pumped Storage Power Station, located in Fengning Manchu Autonomous County, Chengde City, Hebei Province, has a total installed capacity of 3,600 MW. The power station supplies electricity to the Beijing-Tianjin grid and the northern Hebei grid, providing crucial support for addressing issues such as insufficient peak-shaving capacity in these grids.
The Chengde Fengning Pumped Storage Power Station is currently the world’s largest pumped-storage power station and also holds four world firsts.
1. World's largest installed capacity After all units of the Fengning Pumped Storage Power Station are put into operation, its combined regulating capacity will reach as much as 7.2 million kilowatts. In emergency situations, the Fengning Pumped Storage Power Station can provide a regulating output equivalent to one-third of the Three Gorges Hydropower Station’s maximum capacity.
2. World’s No. 1 in energy storage capacity Once fully charged, the power station can store nearly 40 million kilowatt-hours of new energy electricity and can accommodate 8.7 billion kilowatt-hours of new energy throughout the year—making it the world’s largest “power bank.”
3. The underground power plant is the largest in the world. The underground powerhouse of the Chengde Fengning Pumped Storage Power Station has a total length of 414 meters, a height of 54.5 meters, and a span of 25 meters. The 12 generating units are arranged in a single row. Its height is equivalent to that of a 17-story building.
4. The world’s largest underground cavern complex The Chengde Fengning Pumped Storage Power Station has excavated a total of 190 tunnels, with a combined length of 50.14 kilometers—the largest such project in the world. The total length exceeds the circumference of Beijing’s Third Ring Road.
The Fengning Power Station has a total installed capacity of 3.6 million kilowatts, with a designed annual power generation capacity of 66.12 billion kilowatt-hours and an annual pumped-storage capacity of 8.716 billion kilowatt-hours. During the Games, all venues for the Beijing Winter Olympics will be supplied with green electricity—a first in Olympic history. The Zhangjiakou power grid can deliver green electricity locally to venues in the Zhangjiakou competition zone, while green electricity for venues in Yanqing and Beijing will rely on the ±500 kV Zhangbei Flexible DC Transmission Grid. To ensure the stable operation of the Zhangbei Flexible DC Transmission Grid and to guarantee full coverage of green electricity for the Winter Olympics venues, the Fengning Pumped Storage Power Station plays a crucial role.
