[Water Meter Q&A] How many can you get right?
Here are a few questions to help you better understand how to use water meters. Let’s test your knowledge of water meters—how many can you answer correctly?
1. What are the different categories of nominal diameters for water meters?
According to their nominal diameter, water meters are typically classified into small-diameter and large-diameter meters. Water meters with a diameter of 50 mm or less are usually referred to as small-diameter meters, while those with a diameter of 50 mm or more are called large-diameter meters.
2. How do you determine whether a water meter is qualified?
First, you should examine the appearance. The water meter should bear markings such as the manufacturer’s logo, an arrow indicating the direction of water flow, the nominal diameter, and the measurement accuracy class. A water meter that has passed inspection and been certified should be affixed with a certification mark and a seal of conformity issued by a metrological verification institution legally established or authorized by the market supervision and administration department.
3. How long is the warranty period for water meters?
Water meters are nationally mandated measuring instruments subject to mandatory verification, in accordance with the "Relevant Provisions for the Implementation of Verification of Mandatorily Verified Measuring Instruments." Specifically, "residential water meters shall have a service life not exceeding 6 years (for diameters ranging from 15 to 25 millimeters) or 4 years (for diameters greater than 25 to 50 millimeters), after which they must be replaced." In other words, water meters with a diameter ranging from 15 to 25 millimeters can be used for up to 6 years at most.
4. What should I do if I find that the water meter is inaccurate?
If you find that your water meter is inaccurate, absolutely do not attempt to disassemble it yourself. First, you should file a complaint with the market supervision and administration department. The market supervision department will then coordinate with the water supply authority. Once the market supervision department arrives on site and the water supply authority removes the meter, the market supervision department will seal it and send it to a legally designated metrological verification institution established by the market supervision and administration department for verification. Based on the verification results, appropriate legal actions will be taken.
5. How do you read a water meter?
First, open the protective cover on the water meter. On the meter face, there’s a rectangular display window. The numbers shown in this window represent the volume of water used, and the “m” following them stands for the unit—cubic meters. When reading the water meter, simply follow the black digits displayed from left to right; these digits indicate the total water consumption. Finally, you’ll notice two small pointers—these indicate the precise reading, accurate to three or even four decimal places.
