Software and Hardware Implementation of a Centralized Meter Reading System
Smart meter reading has completely replaced manual meter reading. Previously, whether in cities or towns, meter reading for electricity, water, and gas meters was almost entirely done manually—a scientifically unsound and outdated method that consumed vast amounts of manpower and resources, with low accuracy and long processing times. Therefore, the state has decided to replace traditional manual meter reading with computer-based automated meter reading systems. Currently, automated meter reading systems primarily employ wired communication technology and power-line carrier communication technology. Power-line carrier communication leverages existing AC power lines as communication channels, eliminating the need for costly wiring installations and offering significant advantages. However, since power lines are designed to deliver electrical energy to end-use devices rather than to transmit data, they impose numerous limitations on data transmission.
1. Distribution transformers act as a barrier to power-line carrier signals; therefore, power-line carrier signals can only be transmitted within the area covered by a single distribution transformer.
2. Different signal coupling methods result in varying losses for power-line carrier signals.
3. Power lines inherently have pulse interference.
